The heavy metal band Motley Crue was formed in 1981 by bassist Nicki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee. The band's 1983 LP Shout at the Devil was a smash hit and the Crue reached #1 on the pop charts with its 1989 Dr. Feelgood. Throughout its existence, the bandmembers have set new levels for their "exuberant" and outrageous behavior including multiple run ins with police over drugs and alcohol and getting arrested at airports for wearing their outlandish stage garb through security. As part of their cultural statement, the Crue often sports an androgynous look including heavy makeup, high heeled boots and highly coiffed hair styles. The objects of their rebellion include not only the laws of decency but the traditions of gender, at least as it is visually and stylistically defined.
