Luchino Visconti's 1969 film The Damned was originally released in Italian under a title best translated as "The Fall of the Gods". The film is set in Nazi Germany and follows the rich industrialist family, the Essenbecks, through their entanglement and struggles with the Nazi regime. The family takes many twists and turns as the war takes its course. Along with suffering the vicissitudes of war, the family suffers the fallout from its rogue heir Martin played by Helmut Berger, a pedophile who commits incest and rape in the course of the film. In this role, Berger switches in and out of drag as seen in the image at left.
