Eskimos claim androgyny on several counts, the first and foremost being the homogoneity of bulky clothing worn by men and women alike which largely obscures gender distinct morphology. Second is their classification as North American Indians which puts them, in the context of contemporary American ethnocentrism, firmly within the category of "other". As outsiders, they can be viewed as a group of indistinct humanoid creatures without specific gender, both men and women alike. In addition, their proven genetic and cultural ancestry to Asiatic populations merely enhances their "otherness" in the eyes of modern Western civilizations.
