Clico the wild dancing South African bushman became popular around World War I after having been "discovered" by a Captain Hepston in South Africa soon after he was injured chasing an ostrich. Hepston nicknamed the Bushman, whose real name was Franz Taaibosh, "Clico" after the clicking sound of Taaibosh's native Bush tongue. Clico was billed more as a wild "beast" than as a wild man, or for that matter woman during his sideshow career. The fact that he could perform an equisite Khoisan dance was all the more remarkable to an audience prepared to view him as a sub-human beast.
